From Student to Guru: Kalashree Gayatri Deka’s Journey in Bharatanatyam

Bharatanatyam, a classical dance form that weaves stories through intricate movements and expressive gestures, has found a dedicated practitioner and teacher in Kalashree Gayatri Deka. Her journey in the world of Bharatanatyam is a testament to passion, perseverance, and the transformative power of this ancient art form.

Early Years and Initiation into Bharatanatyam:

Kalashree Gayatri Deka’s journey into Bharatanatyam began in her formative years, guided by the rich cultural milieu of India. At the heart of her initiation was the revered Padma Bhushan awardee, Guru Dr. Saroja Vaidyanathan, and Smt. Anuradha Venkataraman. Under their tutelage, Gayatri embarked on a journey that would shape her life and career.

The Rigorous Training and Formative Years:

Training in Bharatanatyam is not just a physical exercise; it is a holistic immersion into the cultural, spiritual, and artistic facets of the dance form. Gayatri’s early years were marked by rigorous training sessions, mastering the fundamentals of Bharatanatyam, from the precise footwork to the emotive abhinaya (expression).

A Doordarshan Graded Artiste and Academic Achievements:

Gayatri’s dedication to her craft was duly recognized when she earned the distinction of becoming a Doordarshan graded artiste. Her commitment extended beyond the dance floor as she pursued academic excellence, earning double graduate degrees—one in Botany (Hons.) from Delhi University and another in Performing Art from Indira Kala Sangit Vishwavidyalaya, Khairagarh.

Contributions as a Faculty:

Having imbibed the essence of Bharatanatyam from her gurus, Gayatri took on the role of a faculty member at Ganesa Natyalaya from 2011 to 2022. This phase of her career allowed her to not only refine her own skills but also impart the knowledge she had acquired to aspiring dancers, nurturing the next generation of Bharatanatyam enthusiasts.

Versatility in Performance and Roles:

Gayatri’s journey in Bharatanatyam extends beyond teaching. As a performer, she has graced the stage in various capacities—solos, duets, and group performances. Her repertoire spans over 100 performances, both nationally and internationally, showcasing the versatility and depth of her artistry.

Global Footprint and Prestigious Performances:

Gayatri’s dance has transcended geographical boundaries. She has performed in cities like Delhi, Chandigarh, Chennai, Tirupati, Vishakhapatnam, Kolkata, and on international stages in places like Dar es Salaam, Budapest, and Mombasa. Notable performances include the opening ceremony of the 19th Commonwealth Games in 2010, the Indo-American Friendship Meet in 2016, and the World Cultural Festival by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar in 2016.

Awards and Recognition:

The excellence in Gayatri’s dance journey has been acknowledged with prestigious awards, including the Kameshwari Nritya Samman 2018 (Kolkata), Nritya Kanaka Mani Samman 2018 (Kolkata), and Nritya Suvarna Kamal Samman 2019 (New Delhi). These accolades are a reflection of her dedication and impact on the world of Bharatanatyam.

Founding Natyam: School of Dance:

Driven by a passion for teaching and a vision to share the profound beauty of Bharatanatyam, Gayatri realized her dream by founding Natyam: School of Dance in October 2021. The academy is not just a place of learning but a cultural hub where the traditional meets the contemporary, and where students are nurtured to become not only proficient dancers but also ambassadors of this timeless art form.

Her approach is not just about imparting dance techniques but instilling a sense of discipline, creativity, and cultural appreciation in her students. The academy welcomes students of all ages and levels, fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment.
